For the past three years, Kalihi youth groups have come together to test their cooking prowess in the 808 Junior Chef Showdown, an activity of the Kalihi Teen Nutritional Program. With sponsorship from AlohaCare, and support provided by Kapiolani Community College's culinary program, this friendly competition gives youth groups the opportunity to show off their cooking chops and present their best dish to a group of guest and celebrity judges. Through months of practice, participating teams learn cooperation, healthy cooking skills, and engagement with the foods on their plate.
This year, the Ehuola Program will be participating along with the Kalihi YMCA, Palama Settlement, Susannah Wesley Community Center, and the Kalihi After School All Stars. In the past, Ehuola has prepared dishes such as chicken lau lau made with lau pele; hoio salad; chicken stew with kalo and uala; and fresh poi. Our lips are sealed about their ono plans for this year. You'll have to come on April 29th to see what they're cooking up!
